I shared a photo of my friend Cynthia on Titty Tuesday last week but I want to share a bit more about my lovely, talented, creative and beautiful friend. She has a huge heart and is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met.

I’ve known Cynthia since we were teenagers. We both went to high school in Denver and went to many raves together. There was definitely a sense of family in the rave culture that we grew up in and we’ve certainly had a lot of wild and fun memories. Cyn is like a sister to me.

One memory in particular, I believe I was 17 or 18 years old, and Cyn and I were asked to shadow box dance at a warehouse rave. I, being ever so wise and responsible, decided it would be a great idea to down a jug of Carlos Rossi just before show time and then jump on the bouncy castle just outside the warehouse. I remember Cynthia laughing as my bounce turned to a heavy, dizzy blur and I did a slow-mo slide crawl out of the bouncy castle.
I proceeded to stay on the ground for a little while completely nauseous and unable to move. Needless to say, I did not dance that night.

Cyn and I used to skateboard together around Denver. We had a brilliant time running from the cops once, although I believe Cyn did get slapped with a skateboarding ticket at some point, but not that night. We had a sort of “band of brothers” at the time that would let us skate with them– Joey Bast, Dustin Charleton, Curt Reefe, Bill Keuhn, Scottyyyy (hi, if you guys are reading this). We hung out with the graffiti kids that wrote for RTD and AWR. I used to sell graf zines for $5 and my friend Jher would let me keep a cut. I was sort of couch surfing at the time but that’s what happens when you leave home at 17. We got into trouble, witnessed many insane brawls, hitchhiked, had our trusty fake I.D.’s… We took road trips to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco and we aboslutely LOVED DANCING (which hasn’t changed). Ohhhhh YOUTH. Fun times.

Cynthia is now a freelance costume designer (she worked for a number of years for the San Diego Children’s Theatre) and she also travels the world as a fire dancer. She’s performed at the Cannes Film Festival, Ultra and private events in the Bahamas, Istanbul, Brazil etc. You can see her perform here in NY on Saturday nights at Webster Hall but she has various bookings throughout the city.

This little lady puts her heart and soul into her performance art and on top of all of this, she is the Founder and CEO of  Ocean Lifeline – a nonprofit committed to preserving marine life through education, strategic campaigns and documentaries.

I’d like to give a special shout out to one of my longest friendships, my lovely fire-spinning friend, Cynthia (below in the tub). She has a bathing suit on, by the way. We recently took a weekend trip to Denver, CO (we went to high school there) and had an amazing time. I’ll post a few pics next week but they’re not exactly TT related…just RAVE related

Catz n Dogz played in the other room. They also played an amazing show. It was an a memorable night. Thank you Verboten for putting on a stellar party. We danced for about 5 hours straight.

A little while ago The Culture of Me joined forces with Sticker Giant and had a sticker contest. Because my friend Cathy was thinking ahead and being awesome, she entered Lovatron into the contest and we won! Thanks Cathy and thanks to our friends at Sticker Giant, we have plenty of happy, excited new stickers just waiting to be plastered onto binders, walls, skateboards, faces, boobs– even trash cans as long as they’re on the OUTSIDE. We can all share the vibe of Titty Tuesday and what better time than now when the weather is just starting to feel like Spring again (well, in NYC anyway).

Most importantly, thanks to my amazing BF, Chris Sanabria, for his ingenious design and commitment to actualizing Lovatron into a damned near perfect logo. THANKS BABE!!

I’m even more thankful to be spending Valentine’s Day with an amazing and beautiful person. I don’t mean beautiful as in his dark, messy hair, his bright brown eyes, his perfect smile, the way his skin still smells sweet and musky even after a night of dancing. I’m talking about the beauty of his mind. The way he dreams, his ideas, his imagination, the words he speaks– the kind that can pick me up after a hard day, the words that calm me, that can hold me even when we’re apart.

We’ve been through a lot over the past year– faced many challenges. Our relationship isn’t perfect, well, I’m certainly not perfect. I’ve let my temper, my jealousy, my insecurities get the best of me. I’ve said things I wish I hadn’t. I always swallowed my fear and my anger. Pain. I let them sink– burying their black tar cancer nails into the pit of my stomach and I didn’t do anything to stop it. I let them burrow caves until I was full and bitter. But he won’t let me fail. He pushes me and helps me through it. I know he helps me because he loves me.

I always thought that I was fairly self-aware and intuitive but I realize that I’ve been rather out of tune with myself. I have a lot of growing to do. I don’t want to live the remainder of my life struggling with the same issues that I’ve been fighting for such a long time. I have all of the tools that I need to reshape myself into the person that I want to become and the person that I am.

I’d like to share some of the things that help me “get through life” in future posts to come. 2012 is going to be a good year but I doubt it will be easy. PERSPECTIVE. PATIENCE. Love who you are and let it go…and I’ll try not to shit-talk to strangers but one thing at a time….

I’ve never had a relationship that I felt like fighting for. I always gave up when things became uncomfortable or if I felt abandoned or hurt or disrespected in some way. I don’t know if we’ll be together forever but I’m not trying to see into the future. I just want to be happy with how I’ve treated him and love him till his head is light. I want to give him the best life that I can. I’ll always be on his side even if it’s just the two of us exiled to a deserted island– to always be loyal, committed and trustworthy– to have something deeper than sexual attraction, to have a strong friendship and unconditional bond.

As the songs states, “you have proved to be, a real human being and a real hero.”

Thank you for being in my life. Thank you for who you are. I love you.
